Description
Jacques Lacan (1901–1981) was a French psychoanalyst and psychiatrist. Sometimes termed the “the French Freud”, Lacan’s influence stretches beyond just psychoanalysis. Much like his Austrian equivalent, Lacan and his work is considered highly controversial. Nonetheless, he has influenced poststructuralism, critical theory, and even feminist theory. His teachings explore the significance of Freud’s discovery of the unconscious within the theory and practice of analysis itself, as well as in connection with a wide range of other disciplines. His most famous quote “the unconscious is structured like a language” can be said to sum up his practice: to incorporate psychoanalysis into structuralism.
