Description
Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French philosopher, historian of ideas, writer, political activist, and literary critic. He is considered one of the most important and controversial scholars of the 20th century. His influence in a wide range of subjects across philosophy and social scientific disciplines remains significant to this day. Although he himself rejected the labels, he is widely associated with structuralism and postmodernism. His theories primarily deal with the interplay between power and knowledge, and how they are used as forms of control through social institutions. He is often listed among the single most cited scholars within the humanities; to this day his name is frequently mentioned in debates of human nature and ideologies of power. By the end of his life, he was often touted as the most prominent living public intellectual in France.
