Description
Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière (1622–1673) was a French actor and playwright; widely regarded as one of the greatest French writers in history. His work comprises more than thirty plays, including Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, The Learned Women, and Dom Juan, many of which form a pillar of French literary education. He is primarily associated with comedy, pioneering his own style based on a combination of Commedia dell’arte and a subtler form of French humour. He frequently himself acted in his plays and famously collapsed while performing The Imaginary Sick, dying shortly thereafter. His plays are still staged today, and his works have been translated into every major language. He remains a hugely influential writer and one of the foremost figures in the pantheon of French literature.
