Description
Tove Ditlevsen (1917-1976) was a prominent Danish poet and author. Her work often touches on themes of female identity, memory and the loss of innocence. A prolific and genre-spanning writer, Ditlevsen published twenty-nine books during her lifetime, including novels, poetry, short stories and several memoirs. Her first big success came with the publication of her poetry collection Flickering Lights (1947). Struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, she was admitted for psychiatric treatment at numerous points in her lifetime. Ditlevsen ultimately succumbed to suicide at the age of fifty-eight. She remains an influential figure in Danish literature, and as of 2014, is included in the literary canon for Danish primary schools.
