Toni Morrison (1931-2019) is one of the most celebrated authors in the world. Her novels have earned her countless awards such as the Pulitzer Prize as well as the Nobel Prize in Literature, which she was the first African-American woman to win. Her novels are known for their epic themes, exquisite language and richly detailed African American characters who are central to their narratives.
Morrison did not publish her first novel, The Bluest Eye, until she was 39 years old. The novel received minimal attention when first published; however, it was placed on many university reading lists in black-studies departments, which promoted further recognition. Later, The New York Times wrote that Morrison’s writing is “so precise, so faithful to speech and so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry” about the novel. Other famous works of her are the novels Sula, Beloved and Song of Solomon.
