Description
Karen Blixen (1885-1962) was a Danish author also known by her pen name Isak Dinesen. Blixen is best known for her memoir Out of Africa (1937), a meditative account of her life on a coffee plantation in Kenya, and for her story Babette’s Feast, part of her short-story collection Anecdotes of Destiny (1958). Both these works brought her world-wide acclaim as a writer and firmly established her literary reputation. They were subsequently adapted into hugely successful Academy-Award winning feature films. Blixen was several times shortlisted for the Nobel Prize, though she never won. According to certain claims, this was in part due to the judges’ concern that they would be accused of favouring Scandinavian authors over other international writers. Today, two museums are dedicated solely to her legacy: The Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi, and the Karen Blixen Museum in Rungsted on Denmark’s Øresund coast.
